[Story about Korean Traditional Crafts] Korean Traditional Paper Han-ji [Hanji]

There is a saying, silk goes 500 years and Korean paper - Hanji - goes 1,000 years.

Unlike what people believe, Korean paper -Hanji - does not degrade when kept properly and can be used permanently as it can be washed and reused.

Made with mulberry, Korean paper -Hanji - is considered the best, probably because quality mulberry was procedded by the most skilled masters.

In Korea, there have been professional paper masters since the Goryeo Dynasty.

In private schools, the essential stationeries were paper, brush, ink tablet, and ink bar.

In farm households, the three treasures of farming were peper, lacquer and linen.

The fact the paper was the first of the essential stationeries and the three treasures tells that paper was closest to the lives of Korean ancestors.

You can easily imagine this becuase scholars needed Korean paper to make books and commoners used Korean Paper - Hanji -to make doors, floorings underwear and even vessels.

Korean paper has existed among us to enrich our body and mind.

Hansan Ramie fabric, which was produced in Seocheong-gun, Chungcueongnam-do in South Korea, is particularly considered the best Ramie fabric because it boasts of a delicate finish and elegant beauty. Ramie fabric is rather hard to make in Korean traditional ways. First, the outer peel of the ramie plant is peeled off to make Taemosh (thick raw rami...
